Shocking: Two young men face 37 years in prison for robbing and raping a tourist and attacking the police who arrested them

Palma, May 16th.

A British tourist recounted on Thursday at the Provincial Court of the Balearic Islands, how she was a victim of robbery and sexual assault by two young men in Magaluf (Mallorca), an assault that was interrupted by the fortuitous arrival of a Local Police patrol. "I don't know what would have happened if the Police lights hadn't appeared," she expressed.

Two young men, aged 20 and 25, are in the dock, accused of also assaulting and threatening the officers who arrested them. The Prosecutor's Office requests a sentence of 17 and a half years in prison for the first accused, and 20 years for the other, for crimes of robbery with violence, sexual assault, injuries, resistance and assault on authority agents, and threats.

The incident took place one early morning in March 2023. The woman explained that she was on vacation in Mallorca and that night she had gone to a bar in Magaluf. She went out to call a family member in England, and since there was a lot of noise in the area near the bar, she moved away a bit.

Then, she ran into the two young men, who approached her from the front and behind. According to the victim, one of them covered her mouth and dragged her to a secluded area, and as they took her away, they took her jewelry, watch, and phone, which was still on the call-- the family member she was speaking with heard her scream for help and quickly booked a flight to Mallorca.

The victim stated that, in addition to robbing her, the two young men began to grope her while speaking to her "in very bad English." They tore her dress and touched her in the genital area. The victim insisted that she resisted at all times but they held her immobilized against the ground: "I just wanted to get them off me."

When asked by the prosecutor, the woman said she did not know if they also intended to rape her: "I don't know what would have happened if the Police lights hadn't appeared."

She referred to the blue lights of a patrol car from the Calvià Local Police that happened to pass by at that moment. According to the woman, when the vehicle was spotted, the assault was interrupted and she managed to break free.

According to the officers, one of the accused got up and approached the vehicle, asking them questions "that didn't make much sense": "Asking us for the time, for example. We found it suspicious." One of the accused tried to flee but was intercepted after a chase.

The victim, on the other hand, tried to explain to the officers what had happened, but the officers did not speak English. Through gestures, she managed to convey that she had been sexually assaulted. According to the officers, when they informed the young men of their arrest, they reacted with violence and threats.

The Prosecutor's Office also requests a fine for the accused, as well as a restraining order in favor of the victim, supervised release for eight years, and disqualification from working with minors. It also proposes the expulsion from the national territory for one of them, who is in irregular situation in Spain.

In addition, the public prosecutor demands that the accused be obliged to compensate the tourist with 16,000 euros for the sequelae and moral damages, and the two police officers with 104 and 1,100 euros for the injuries.
